To become an instructor I had to go through a series of tests similar to those that you have to do in order to pass your test. I qualified in January 2003. Instructors are graded 1-6, the highest attainable being 6, I am currently a grade 5.
1) We have to pass a theory test that consists of 100 questions, we must secure a pass of 85/100.
2) Then we take another driving test, very similar to the learner test but longer in duration and we are only allowed 6 minors.
3) Finally we are tested on our instructional ability, this is a 1 hour test conducted by a Senior Examiner. The criteria for this is very strict and the pass rate for this part is quite low. A trainee instructor is someone who has done the first two parts but has yet to pass the final qualifying exam.
